Professor Martin Knapp

Martin Knapp

Martin is Professor of Health and Social Care Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), based in the Care Policy and Evaluation Centre in the Department of Health Policy.

He has also been Director of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) School for Social Care Research since 2009.

Martin has worked for many years as a researcher in the fields of social care, mental health, dementia, learning disability and neurodiversity. Much of his work uses economic arguments and evidence to inform policy discussion and influence practice development.

His work has had numerous impacts on policy and practice in England and internationally.

Professor Raphael Wittenberg

Raphael WittenbergRaphael Wittenberg is an Associate Professorial Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), based in the Care Policy and Evaluation Centre (formerly Personal Social Services Research Unit), in the Department of Health Policy.

He is also Deputy Director of the Centre for Health Service Economics and Organisation in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. He was previously a senior economist at the Department of Health and Social Care.

Raphael leads a programme of research on financing long-term care, which aims to make projections of demand for long-term care for older people and associated expenditure to 2041. He is also conducting research on dementia care, personalisation in care homes for older people and costs of multi-morbidity.

In addition to the Older People and Frailty Policy Research Unit, he is a member of the Adult Social Care, Economics of Social and Health Care and Policy Innovation and Evaluation Policy Research Units.

Dr Magdalena Walbaum

Research Officer

Magdalena WalbaumMagdalena is a Research Officer in Social Care at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), based in the Care Policy and Evaluation Centre in the Department of Health Policy.

Magdalena has worked as a researcher in health economics and has been working with the Ministry of Health of Chile since 2015, providing evidence in public health, economic evaluations and modelling of non-communicable diseases for policy making.
